Chetan Bhagat is a lucky dog. He may be labeled mediocre by his critics but his fans love him and ensure his books are best sellers. But that’s not why I am calling him lucky. The dude is lucky because his rather average novels get transformed into magnificent films. It happened with 3 Idiots and now it’s an encore with Kai Po Che.
Amit Sadh who is best remembered for his stay in the house of Big Boss is another talent who impresses you as Omi – a character that has shades of gray but is yet very vulnerable. This trio is well supported by Manav Kaul as a leader of a Hindu right wing political party and the beautiful Amrita Puri
Let me review Kai Po Che using words from the titles of Bhagat’s best sellers.
FIVE Point Someone
The film is entertaining thanks to the breathtaking performances of FIVE actors. Sushant Singh Rajput is a super star in the making. He has delivered a fabulous performance and has a screen presence you can’t ignore. He excels in his role as Ishaan and I am glad he has moved onto the big screen after a successful stint on television. Raj Kumar Yadav is one of the most underrated actors in India. I have enjoyed all his earlier performances (LSD, GOW, Shaitan and Talaash) and it’s a pleasure to watch him essay the role of Govind. Amit Sadh who is best remembered for his stay in the house of Big Boss is another talent who impresses you as Omi – a character that has shades of gray but is yet very vulnerable. This trio is well supported by Manav Kaul as a leader of a Hindu right wing political party and the beautiful Amrita Puri who is paired opposite Yadav. It’s superlative performances of these FIVE actors that make Kai Po Che a film you shouldn’t miss.
ONE Night @ the Call Center
ONE person who needs to be applauded for this film is the film’s director Abhishek Kapoor. I still remember watching his atrocious debut film Uff !Yeh Mohabbat and he has come a long way since. After a forgettable Aryan he delivered the super hit Rock On! And now he is back with Kai Po Che which is perhaps this year’s best film so far. Abhishek is ONE director to watch out for.
The THREE Mistakes of my life
The film only has THREE songs but each song is beautifully composed and music is an integral part of this film. Amit Trivedi once again gives us a haunting score. I can’t seem to get the song Manjha out of my head. I loved the music of this film.
2 other departments that excel in Kai Po Che are background score and cinematography. Technically this is a brilliant film.
Revolution 2020 – LOVE, CORRUPTION, AMBITION
Kai Po Che celebrates LOVE and friendship, exposes CORRUPTION of political ideologies while essentially being a story of three friends – each having their own AMBITION – Govind wants money, Ishaan wants to nurture talent and Omi wants to feel secure and loved.
My final verdict after a rather long review – Go watch it. Ideally, in a theater.
