Delectable Blend: Nyonya Food Festival
Restaurants — By Neha K Kulkarni on March 22, 2012 at 4:24 PMSpice Kitchen at the Pune Marriott and Convention Centre is hosting Nyonya Food Festival along with their usual dinner buffet. This festival is a blend of Chinese style of cooking namely the wok and grill and the Malay ingredients like kafir leaves, Malay chillies and fresh turmeric to name a few. The other ingredients being sambal sauce, lemongrass and coconut milk.
The food is basically acidic because of the spices used and is best when paired with white wine. The menu had some cocktails too which were specially prepared to blend in with the cuisine.
We started off with Otak Otak which is basically minced Betki fish which is pan-grilled and wrapped in banana leaf. It was sheer melt in the mouth. This was followed by Assam Laksa which is a coconut based soup flavoured with tamarind failed to impress. The main course was divided into two sections namely the regular buffet spread as well as a live grill counter with an array of spices and meats to choose from. The highlights of the main course being Fish in eggplant tomato sambal sauce which is a spicy yet tangy preparation and Lamb chilli garlic in hot basil sauce that is an aromatic preparation with its perfectly cooked lamb. To end it all with there is the perfect dessert – Ais Kacang that includes crushed ice, slices of dried fruits, peanut powered and syrups just like our very own golas.

[quote]“The response to the Nyonya promotion so far has been very positive. People in Pune like the spices that are used in Nyonya cuisine and there are certain similarities between Nyonya and the local cuisine.. After seeing the positive response from our guests for the Nyonya Festival, we hope to bring many such different cuisines for Puneites to experience in the future.”
