Mandals to put blood donors’ directory onlineNews — By The Desk on September 2, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Times of India: Several Ganapati mandals in the city participate in blood donation activity with enthusiasm. Most of these mandals maintain directories of the blood groups of their volunteers. Now, these directories of donors and their blood groups will all go online. Sending an SMS or logging in on the online portal is all that a mandal need to do to access information of their donors and reach out to them in need.
“There are 1,200 Ganapati mandals in Pune. And every mandal has their own volunteers ranging between 15 and 100, who are involved in various activities throughout the festival. Our aim is to gather information of each mandal’s donors and volunteers on one platform and create a consolidated database of their blood groups so that it could be used in times of need,” said paediatrician Rajeev Joshi, director of HI-TECH (Health Information Technology Education Consulting and High-tech) Medical Informational Services Pvt Ltd – a software firm that has created SMS-based blood donor network for blood banks in Pune.
Joshi elaborated, “Most of these mandals organise blood donation camps during the festival and have maintained their own database. There are mandals who have not yet created a physical database, but they have their team of dedicated volunteers who rise to the occasion whenever anybody requires blood transfusion.”
“What we are going to do is computerise the physical directories of donors as well as create database of those mandals who have not done it so far. This consolidated data will be made available on one single portal. This will eliminate the loss of precious time which goes into ferreting a possible donor,” Joshi said.
“We are going to approach the mandals one by one. Besides, we are going to appeal to the mandals to register with us by sending an SMS. Office bearer of the mandal can visit www.arogyamitra.com and register the mandal, or send an SMS as under AROGYA GNPTMNDL TO 919246356765. On receipt of such an SMS, further instructions will be sent by SMS, according to which the registration is to be completed,” said Uday Thatte, co-director of Hi-Tech.
While registering the mandal can opt for a 6 to 10 character unique name using which all the members of the mandal will be linked for example. The volunteers and citizens staying near the mandal can enroll in the list just by sending an SMS. They have to use the 6 to 10 digit unique name of the mandal for this purpose, Thatte said.
“We have also requested our existing 3,500 registered donors to approach the mandals in their area and convince them to register with the system,” added Thatte.
