Stone Water Grill

The recently-opened “Stone Water Grill” in Koregaon Park (just past ABC Farms) is apparently where the ‘beautiful people’ of Pune are going these days. Thinking (or hoping) that we would fit in, we went along. And then, two weeks’ later, we went back. Says it all really!

Ambience [rating:5/5]

In terms of ambience, Stone Water Grill is in a completely different league from other restaurants in Pune. My first view of the place, from the top of the entrance steps, took my breath away: its outdoor dining section and bar area are brought to life with sparkling lights, water features and, in the bar section, tall wooden pillars. For some reason the scene brought to mind the decadence of a Roman banquet!

We were led to the indoor section which again is lavishly decorated in a black and white theme. Everything about this place screams luxury: from the cutlery to the menu card to the lighting. In fact, the indoor restaurant is surrounded by a channel of water which made me feel rather like a Queen sitting in my castle, surrounded by a moat. And in what other restaurant would you find a full-size sofa in the bathrooms?

As for the music, I’ve heard that it has been chosen by well-known DJ MaFaiza and is pleasant and unobtrusive.

Food [rating:5/5]

If you can judge the quality of a menu on the length of time it takes the guests to make up their mind then Stone Water Grill has a very good menu indeed! We were completely engrossed for about fifteen minutes, apart from the odd cry of “they have pâté!” and “bacon, I can’t believe it!” Eventually we made up our minds and ordered a Lebanese platter with different dips (including hummus) for starter. Alongside the starter we received delicious hot bread rolls (just be careful not to spoil the rest of the meal by eating too many!) For main course I sampled the pasta with strips of beef tenderloin while my companions enjoyed steaks. Although we could easily have called it a day there, the food was so tasty that we decided to indulge ourselves by ordering the Bailey’s cake and panna cotta; a decision we didn’t regret. In fact, all the courses were delicious. The only slight disappointment was that the (Jacob’s Creek) wine which we ordered was not in stock. The cost of the meal was Rs 1800 per couple, which is less than we expected it to be (hence two visits in the space of a fortnight!).

Service [rating:4/5]

Overall, the service was excellent, as you would expect in a restaurant of this calibre. However, I have two suggestions on how it could be improved. The first is that the waiters need to be a little less intrusive – they must have asked us how the food was at least three times during the meal (which is understandable given that it is a new restaurant, but a little over the top). Secondly, at the end of the meal, a waiter asked us to fill out a comments form, leaving our email addresses. We declined. A little while later another waiter approached and again urged us to fill out a form. This is a pet hate of mine: when a guest declines to fill in a form then on no account should they be approached again! I have had similar experiences all across Pune. I hope that Stone Water Grill irons out these small problems and manages to lead the way in terms of service, as it is already doing with its ambience and food.

A 5 star rating?? That would be the stuff given out to a more deserving place. But definitely not SWG. Agreed that the lounge is probably one of its kinds in Pune ( and I may be wrong). Agreed that the food is great… And Agreed that the most 'beautiful' people do come here .. But to rate it so highly, would be simply over the top.

    Here s why

Ambience… 4/5 surely.. Great interiors,, nice lighting, and good music. The wooden interiors in the lounge , the water cascade and the lounge-style lighting, including under the table, made for a good first impression

Staff behaviour… 1/5 … My rating with the staff is not because I picked up a fistfight with any of them.. ? .. it s more because quite a few of the staff, were trying to display what I call ‘misplaced exclusivity’. We had ofcourse made a booking… rather we could not, since their phones were engaged all day… or they were kept that day. My friend and I spent more than an hour and half at different times during the day to get an appointment. You d think I wanted to go to a Kingfisher Calendar launch party or something.
So you naturally go, directly at the place at about 8:00 to book a place at 9:00. I get told at the entrance by this headphone clad entrance guy.. “Sorry we are all booked for the evening, we ‘may’ have place in the lounge but I ll have to look. So he checks and we get a place for about 4 ( we were 9 of us). One gaze in the dining area would tell you two things.. The place is not as ‘full’ as was alleged by the guy at the entrance… and secondly surely the phones were kept on hold cos the place was not exactly full.
The seating available was for 8 people, but we said we could adjust in that space. Someone among the restaurant folks comes up with the “We can’ allow this” statement.
It s not like we were crowding in like a Mumbai local.. that’s what I call misplaced exclusivity. The waiters were ofcourse asking whether we liked the food all the time,

Food 3/5 :- All 3 stars for quality of food.. The starters(specially prawns) were nice.. The main course that I had ( Tequila Chicken sautee) a little to salty for my taste. I would normally not complain, but if I am paying 250 for nothing more than a few morsels, I do have a right to expect quality. Maybe I am of the old-style belief that Aamir Khan;’s character said in Rangeela… Aisa kuch khaao ki aang pay lagay. So I would have expected more quantity,

Value for money :2.5/5 … just about there. It didn’t give you an overall sense of satisfaction. I will definitely consider my options before going back again… And this time I hope some one picks the phone for the reservation…. ?

@ Nitin, having recently eaten at SWG again, I would have to agree that my five star rating is too high. Although the ambience and food are great, the service on my last visit left a lot to be desired. Please check out today's Pande-monium article where I have gone into more detail. And please continue to let me know your thoughts!

I have just arrived in Pune for a lenghty stay of employment having just had a torrid time in Kolkatta.
I went to Stone Grill last night and was extremely dissapointed –so much that I refused to pay for the main course!! No problms with the layout etc -I have seen better -toilets too far away and no loo paper!!
Restaurant was over all too cold. Food choice looked good – spicy crab soup was ok – bread was fine – but main course of Lamb shank was disgusting — apiece of bone and grizzle.
Need to improve that aspect of it –and to just offer another one was an insult –as if it was going to be any better!!!!!!!
Certainly on my visit not 5 star !! would struggle to be honest with 3
I would most probably try again but as usual with so called India restaurants they fail to live up to the written word and expectations

The ambience is nice however the music tends to get monotonous if you are not into trance.
Booze is extremely expensive…1000bucks cover charge would be spent in buying one round of booze for u and your partner.

Well I can’t wait to share my experience of SWG. I went there with my boyfriend .Must say nice, cozy, romantic place to date. Talking about the food it was mouth watering and had a blend of Asian and European flavor. Service was outstanding with attentive and welcoming staff. Also the bar has a great offering to choose from like 70 varieties of wines and rare Single Malts. A place worth visiting .Good job!

Staff at stone water grill is made of extremely rude and pompus people .. Hats off for
pathetic management in valet parking and service !! .
If the place is full of people with no place to dine the stone water grill staff does not even make a effort to look for for new tables to dine. Their tone is not even close to being apologetic .

’I cannot give you a table ” was the only reply from an arrogant overbearing silly guy at the entrance on 27th Sept ( Sunday 2009)

Its a pity that these guys ( stone water grill staff / owners ) are into a hotel business and they don’t even understand how to welcome customers.Stone water grill really needs to look into its braggart ways of self importance.

Its high time that they understand they cannot really stand up to other hotels in Koregaon park Pune that are many many times superior in terms of customer service ..

I really like what you have posted here, it is a very well written and great article that gets right to the point. You could use a little reworking of the blog layout though, but the design is overall very nice. Great job, Thanks!

Staff is very rude and mannerless. Last week went there with my friend and these people came up with an weird logic that GUYS CANT ENTER THE PLACE WITHOUT FORMAL SHOES. It was way too illogical , they were being veru rude while stating that there is no problems for girls. Hated it like anything

  • smriti

I had a terrible experience at stone water….we were a bunch of girls who made reservations at stone water. Two tables were joined for us since we were a big number and we were charged a cover. Half way through the night some of us were on the dance floor and some of us were on the table sitting. To our surprise in order to make an extra buck our second table was given to a group of rowdy people without being informed. It was yet okay we did not complain or create a fuss. By mistake one of my friends elbow must have hit the girl sitting on the next table, we were taken aback when that girl twisted my friends hand and started yelling, when i tried to stop her she punched me on my face and i started bleeding. To this another friend of mine told that rowdy girl to stop in return she pulled her hair and flung her on the table. There was chaos in the club but the management dint do anything because that table had a pending bill of 28000 and they refused to pay it if they were kicked out. They took advantage of the fact that were girls and would not do too much about it. So today someone commits murder in stone water and will get away cause there is nothing that the management will do. I wonder why they have bouncers!!!!!!
